Ways to Lock/Unlock Aadhaar

How To Lock Aadhaar

To strengthen the privacy and security of your Aadhaar number UIDAI has introduced a new feature to lock and unlock your Aadhaar number. Once it is locked you will not be able to perform any form of Authentication (Biometric, Demographic or OTP) using your Aadhaar Number. However, you can still use your latest Virtual ID for performing Authentication.

To lock your Aadhaar you must first generate your virtual ID. If the virtual ID is not generated by you then you will not be able to lock your Aadhaar number.

There are three ways to lock your Aadhaar:-

Through UIDAI website.
Through mAadhaar application.
By sending an SMS to UIDAI on 1947.

For all the above mention process you need to have Aadhaar linked mobile number.

1 Lock Aadhaar through UIDAI website

If you would like to lock your Aadhaar through UIDAI dedicated website then you can follow below given steps:-

Step 1 Go to official website

To lock your Aadhaar through UIDAI you need to go to official website where you need to go to "MY Aadhaar" and then under "Aadhaar Service" you need to click on Aadhaar Lock and Unlock Service link.

Step 2 Enter Aadhaar number

After visiting the official page you need to enter your personal details first you need to select "Lock UID" as you want to lock your Aadhaar card then you need to enter your Aadhaar number

Step 3 Enter your Name and Pin code

Now you will be required to enter your full Name and Pin code.

Step 4 Enter security code

You will be required to enter the security code which is showing in the image if you are unable to read the code then you can click on reload button. After entering the correct security code then click on "Send OTP" button if you have the time based OTP then you can click on "Enter TOTP" button.

Step 5 Enter OTP

You will receive an SMS on your Aadhaar linked mobile number, you need to check your mobile network and incoming validity to receive the OTP, sometimes OTP does not come due to slow server if you have not received the OTP then do this process again but after an hour. After receiving the OTP Enter it then click on "Submit OTP" button.

Here your Aadhaar is locked now you can use VID for authentication

2 Lock Aadhaar through mAadhaar application

If you would like to lock your Aadhaar through mAadhaar dedicated website then you can follow below given steps:-

Step 1 Register your Aadhaar in mAadhaar application

To unlock Biometric through mAadhaar application you need to first register your Aadhaar in mAadhaar application.

Step 2 Tap on "My Aadhaar"

Now you need to tap on "My Aadhaar" button given below on mAadhaar application.

Step 3 Enter password

Now you need to enter the password that you have created at the time of registering your Aadhaar in mAadhaar application.

Step 4 Click on set Aadhaar lock

Click on set Aadhaar lock to lock your Aadhaar card. After this you will be directed to a page where it is mentioned that virtual ID(VID) is important to lock your Aadhaar

Step 5 Click on "I have Virtual ID"

Now you need to click on "I have virtual ID" if you don't have virtual ID then you need to click on "Get Virtual ID" togenerate virtual ID

Step 6 Request OTP

Now you need to request for OTP for that you need your virtual ID that you have generated, if you have your virtual ID(VID) then enter the VID and then enter the security captcha that is showing in a image, if you are unable to read the captcha then you can click on "Try Another" button, after entering the correct captcha click on "Request OTP" button.

Step 7 Click on verify

You need to enter the OTP that you have received on your registered mobile number if you have not received the OTP within 30 second then you can click on "Resend" button, after receiving the OTP you can click on "Verify" button.

Here your Aadhaar is locked now you can use VID for authentication

3 Lock Aadhaar by sending an SMS

If you want to lock your Aadhaar card you need to register your number in your Aadhaar. If you have already registered your number in Aadhaar then you can block your Aadhaar by following below given steps:-

Step 1 Send OTP Request

To get OTP send SMS from your registered mobile number to 1947 to get OTP in the format "GETOTP" Last 4 digits of your Aadhaar number or Last six digits of your Virtual ID number. For example if your Aadhaar number is 9897 2233 1122 then SMS will be sent as GETOTP 1122.

Step 2 Save OTP

Once the SMS is sent by you, UIDAI will send you 6-digit OTP via SMS. You need to save it as it will be required to lock your Aadhaar card

Step 3 Send SMS to lock Aadhaar

Now you will be required to send SMS with the OTP to 1947 in the format LOCKUID <SPACE>Aadhaar-Number-last-4-digits and 6 digits of OTP. For example if the Aadhaar number is 7879-5678-6789 and received OTP is "123212" then the SMS will be LOCKUID 6789 123212 and send it to 1947

You will receive an SMS that your Aadhaar is locked now you have to use virtual ID for authentication

How To Unlock Aadhaar

To unlock your Aadhaar you must have your virtual ID. If you have forgot your virtual id then you can retrieve it by sending SMS in the format "RVID <SPACE> Aadhaar-Number-last-4-digits" and send it to 1947.

There are three ways to unlock your Aadhaar:-

Through mAadhaar application.
By sending an SMS to UIDAI on 1947.
